What Does The Bible Say About Masturbation?

What does the Bible say about masturbation? This is a frequently asked question and it is a difficult question to answer because the Bible never mentions masturbation. So lets examine this subject.

Isn't it better to masturbate than to commit fornication? Yes, but this is in regard to singles, married individuals should have no real need to, if there is a problem, seek help!

"If they do not have self control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn" (1 Corinthians 7:9)

Masturbation only relieves the sexual desire for a short time, in the long run it only creates a deeper desire and capacity for it, which in turn will lead to more masturbation. If you are not careful you will find that you need to masturbate more and more often. This creates a vicious circle of dependency, like the alcoholic who craves another drink. The more he indulges in his dependency, the more ensnared by his addiction he becomes. And this is the nature of all sin, and that is why Christ stated that all who sin become a slave to sin (John 8:34).

"all things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything" (1 Corinthians 6:12)

Another thing is that masturbation usually involves fantasy, visualization, or pornography. The Bible is very clear regarding these areas of lust. It teaches that we must not look lustfully at each other and nor should we behave in such a manner as to cause others to lust after us.

"You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery. But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:28).

Sexual urges are not wrong, they are natural and God given, they were created to be used.

"No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it" (1 Corinthians 10:13).

"Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God" (2 Corinthians 7:1).

While the Bible warns against impure thoughts and sexual immorality in general, it is silent on masturbation. The key thought here is to not let yourself get out of control, or, of having unclean sexual thoughts.

"But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;" (Ephesians 5:3)

So does masturbation hold the appearance of immorality? And what effect does it have on our bodies, keep in mind that masturbation is highly addictive, which in turn causes one to lose self control, and eventually can turn to sin?
